Mahfud denies Bibit meetings were ethics violation

Constitutional Court chief justice Mahfud MD has denied that he violated the court’s ethics code by meeting with Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) deputy chief Bibit Samad Rianto and his lawyer Bambang Widjojanto at a time when they were plaintiffs in a judicial review case at the court.

“I have met both Bibit and Bambang on a rather frequent basis and so far we only spend our time discussing the country’s efforts in fighting graft. I will welcome every effort to seek clarification over this,” he said Tuesday as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.

Beforehand, Mahfud’s former colleague at the court, Arsyad Sanusi, said he suspected Mahfud had violated the ethics codes by meeting with Bibit and Bambang when Bibit and Chandra M. Hamzah, another KPK deputy chief, had filed a judicial review of the existing KPK law to the Constitutional Court.
