JAKARTA: Thousands of tourists flocked the National Monument (Monas) on Sunday, prompting the establishment operator to implement an early closure of the tourism site.
More than 11,000 tourists lined up on Sunday to enter the monument and climb to its observation deck, prompting the site operator to stop selling tickets long before its usual closing time.
“We just don’t want Monas to experience overcapacity,” Monas chief operator Rini Haryani said, as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.
Monas received 11,790 visitors on Sunday, more than 2,400 of whom sought access to its observation deck.
The number of visitors on Sunday far exceeded the number of tourists it received on regular weekdays, normally between 3,000 and 4,000 visitors. The Monas observation deck can only accommodate up to 75 people at any given time.
The Monas operator also decided to limit the amount of time tourists can spend at the observation deck. — JP
