Attackers of Temanggung churches not residents: Police

The assailants who burned down and ransacked several churches in Temanggung, Central Java, on Tuesday were not residents of the district, National Police chief Gen. Timur Pradopo has said.

An angry mob waiting outside of Temanggung District Court to hear the verdict of Antonius Richmon Bawengan, who was on trial for blasphemy, were from a different region, Timur said, but did not mention where they were from.

An angry crowd, dissatisfied with the sentence handed down to Antonius – even though it was the maximum sentence under the law – set fire to Bethel and Pantekosta churches, and threw stones at Santo Petrus and Paulus churches on Tuesday.

Timur said the situation in Temanggung had returned to normal, adding that the police would intensify efforts to predict and anticipate any social conditions that might affect security, he said, as quoted by Tempointeraktif.com.

“We will optimize [our efforts] especially as we will receive support from the military and officials from the local administration,” he said. “The roots of the problem must be resolved.”
