President wants non-governmental elements involved in ASEAN Summit

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said the government would involve all national components in the organization of the ASEAN Summit in 2011 to make ASEAN community-based.

"The host for the ASEAN and East Asia Summit meetings is not only the government but all of us and all components of the nation," he said when opening the plenary cabinet meeting to discuss Indonesia`s preparations as host for the ASEAN Summit 2011 at his office here on Friday.

From the start he said the government would involve the younger generation, businesses and academics for the event.

"Remember ASEAN must really become an organization which is based on the community. So from planning to implementation the government would involve universities, younger generation and others. So they should not be invited to attend the summit but also participate in the planning," he said.

President Yudhoyono said ASEAN and EAS would enter into a new phase in 2011.
ASEAN, he said, would in the future reach the world community while EAS would enter a new chapter following the membership of the US and Russia in it.

Yudhoyono further said that Indonesia has had a tradition of being a good host and has always been successful in the organization of events and preparing the materials.

He referred to a number of events as examples such as the Dasasila Bandung in 1955, the Bogor Goal in 1994, the UNFCCC Bali Roadmap in 2007 and the Tsunami Summit in 2005.

The cabinet meeting was also attended by ASEAN secretary general Surin Pitsuwan.
On the occasion President Yudhoyono named Vice President Boediono to lead a national committee that would coordinate the meetings.

Yudhoyono also called for cooperating with the ASEAN Secretariat for the success of the event.

ASEAN ten members include Indonesia, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Laos, the Philippines, Myanmar and Thailand.(*)
