Police arrest No. 1 terror suspect Abu Tholut

Indonesia's antiterror unit Densus 88 has arrested Abu Tholut, an alleged senior terrorist and mastermind behind a series of armed robberies across North Sumatra.

“We cornered him in Kudus [Central Java] at 8 a.m.,” National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Iskandar Abubakar said Friday.

Iskandar said police investigators were questioning the suspect, and were trying to establish the nature of his connection to an Aceh-based terrorist cell.

Abu Tholut was released from prison in 2007 after serving just under four years for terrorism.

The 48-year-old is a former instructor of the Jamaah Islamiyah military camp, and later established military training camps in the Philippines and then in the Aceh regency of Jantho.

Tholut was put back on the police’s wanted list for his alleged involvement in a series of terrorist attacks, including the armed robbery of a CIMB Niaga bank in North Sumatra in August. (courtesy by the Djakarta Post)
